What It Takes To Be a Great Leader

In her TED Talk, "What It Takes to Be a Great Leader," Roselinde Torres draws from her 25 years of observing effective leaders to challenge conventional leadership development programs. Torres argues that many leadership programs are outdated, relying on success models suited to a past era rather than today's rapidly changing world. She points out that despite extensive corporate training efforts, significant leadership gaps persist in many organisations.

Torres identifies three critical questions that potential leaders need to address to thrive in the future:

  1. Where are you looking to anticipate change? Great leaders are proactive, always scanning the horizon for trends and disruptions that could impact their organisation. They position themselves and their teams to capitalise on these changes.
  2. What is the diversity measure of your network? Effective leaders build diverse networks that challenge their thinking and provide fresh perspectives. These networks are not limited by geography, industry, or social circles, allowing leaders to draw on a broad range of insights and experiences.
