The Cynefin Framework is a decision-making and problem-solving tool that helps individuals and teams navigate complex situations by understanding the nature of the problems they face. Developed by Dave Snowden in 1999, this framework provides a structured approach to identifying the type of system or context one is operating in, which in turn informs the best approach for decision-making and action. The framework categorises problems into five domains: Clear (formerly known as Simple), Complicated, Complex, Chaotic, and Confusion, each requiring different strategies and responses.
Key Components of the Cynefin Framework
- Clear (Simple): The domain of best practice. Problems have clear, straightforward solutions that can be replicated. It is important to sense, categorise, and respond.
