Coaching Tools Guide: Force Field Analysis
Overview of Force Field Analysis
Force Field Analysis is a decision-making and problem-solving tool developed by Kurt Lewin, a pioneer in social psychology. It is used to identify and analyse the forces that support or hinder a proposed change. This tool helps clients visually map out the "driving forces" (those that push towards the desired state) and "restraining forces" (those that pull away from it). By assessing these forces, clients can develop strategies to strengthen the driving forces and reduce the impact of the restraining forces, thereby facilitating smoother transitions and more successful outcomes.
When to Use Force Field Analysis

- Signs: The client is contemplating a major life or business decision, such as changing careers, launching a new project, or making a lifestyle shift.
- Goal: To help the client clearly see the factors supporting and opposing the change, enabling a more informed decision-making process.
